the Windy City

Tyler and I had two free flights built up that we had to use by February 23 or we would have to pay to renew them. So, I thought why not go ahead and use these for a last chance trip before our little lady makes her debut!

Well, I know February 14th is Valentine's day, but February 13th is a more exciting day for Tyler and I.  On February 13, Tyler and I celebrated our five year date-a-versary!!  On February 13, 2008 Tyler and I met at Taco Bueno for the first time and our lives have been blessed every since that day.

I thought this would be the perfect reason to surprise Tyler with a get away to Chicago with our free flights.  So, I emailed with his boss and was able to get him two days off!  I also worked with another employee at his work and set up a discounted rate at a nice hotel in Chicago.

On Wednesday (February 13th), I showed up to Tyler's work on my "way home from work" to give him his Valentine card.  When I got there, everyone else knew what was going on but Tyler had no idea.  I gave him his card and he just sat it on his desk.  I had to encourage him to open it.  Once he opened it, he saw that there were two airline tickets to Chicago.  He was like "We're going to Chicago? When?"

We all (myself and all of his co-workers) told him "tonight!" We flew out of Dallas that night and landed in Chicago around 10:30.  He was so surprised!

At the airport waiting for our plane.

On Thursday, we walked to Gino's East - the BEST deep dish in Chicago!  It was so incredible.

We are so excited!

Then we walked back to the hotel and stopped in at several stores for some light shopping.  It was so much fun to just stroll around without a schedule. That night we celebrated Valentine's day by splitting a burger at Cheesecake Factory and then sharing a piece of cheesecake. Ellie loved that!

That night we met up with a friend, Ashley Rountree, who is from Mansfield but lives in Chicago.  The original plan was to go to this comedy show that Ashley's friend was putting on; however, when we got to the theatre the show was sold out. :( So, we ended up just stopping in a Starbuck's and catching up.  It was so good to see her lovely face!

On Friday, we slept in and then walked to Portillo's hot dog joint.  It was an awesome atmosphere and we had delicious Chicago-dogs and Chili Cheese dogs.

After lunch, we walked to the "Bean" structure (actually called Cloud Gate.)  This was a very cool experience!  I thought it would be in the middle of a courtyard by a bunch of shopping, but it is actually in the middle of a park, right by a big amphitheater.

After we visited this park, we walked back to the hotel.  Along the way we stopped in a Chicago Blackhawks store.  It was a utopia for my husband!  Instead of buying Blackhawks gear there, we decided to wait until we were at the game that night.

This was the last surprise of the trip, I bought Tyler tickets to the Blackhawks vs. Sharks hockey game.  Unfortunately, the only tickets available were "standing room only."  But we had fun nonetheless!

This was such a fun experience and a great trip!  I loved getting to see the surprise and excitement on Tyler's face.  He is an amazing husband and I am so blessed to have him in my life!
